World news is the segment of a television or radio news program that covers international affairs. It may be broadcast live from a foreign city or taped from an overseas correspondent, whose job is to gather information about events occurring in a specific area. Often, a correspondent will be located in a capital city or other country’s main hub. Correspondents often report on several different issues, primarily covering political and military developments, and they will file stories to a news editor.
Throughout the years, World News Now has been known to employ a lighthearted tone on occasion and to feature various segments that are either offbeat or funny. It has also served as a sort of training ground for new anchors, who have been given higher-profile positions on the network’s evening news programs.
In addition, the show has featured a number of repurposed story packages from other ABC news programs and has been known to play humorous video clips from YouTube. The show has also offered viewers the opportunity to interact with the anchors via e-mail, which was one of the first uses of this method of communication on a national broadcast.
When a full-time anchor leaves the program, a “going away” ceremony is usually held during his or her last broadcast. When the program debuted, the anchors were honored with cardboard cutouts in the studio rafters for this purpose, but later on, the practice was replaced by a graphics sequence featuring a head-shot of the departing anchor being moved into an image of the original World News Now set’s rafters and monitors.
